Based in Havana, Tania Bruguera is one of the most prominent contemporary Cuban artists. Since years she initiated and works on the concept of Arte Útil to promote ways for art to work effectively in ordinary life. Within this line, she developed in recent years a strong interest in experimental pedagogy and its potential to subvert the hierarchies of knowledge. One exemple has been the School of Integration, which empowers people with migrant background to share their knowledge with the inhabitants of the place where they are now based. For The Diasporic Schools she creates a new platform, an open phone line, to allow and facilitate private discussion and political conversations between strangers belonging to the Cuban diaspora and Cubans living in the island. Indeed, as a result of government propaganda, which has portrayed the Cuban diaspora as traitors and cowards, the relationship between Cuba and its diaspora is a particularly complex one. Nevertheless, today it is more necessary than ever to build bridges, create places of encounter and delve together into shared heritage and possible futures. In 2017 Tania Bruguera presented Endgame in the frame of Kunstenfestivaldesarts, a radical staging of Samuel Beckett’s play, and the notion of captivity. Year after year, and with this new project, Tania Bruguera perseveres and continues to engage herself artistically and be outspoken locally and internationally.
