Yudai Kamisato / Okazaki Art Theatre Kawasaki / Tokyo
Yudai Kamisato (b. 1982) began life in Lima, Peru. Raised in Kawasaki, he also lived for a few years in the Republic of Paraguay and in the US. Kamisato established the Okazaki Art Theatre in 2003 for the purpose of presenting both original and existing works under his own direction. His art freely mixes the mundane with the extraordinary and probes corporeality in a manner emphasising the existence of the actors. This distinctive approach has won him high accolades in Japan’s theatre scene. In 2006, Kamisato became the youngest person ever to win first prize in the Toga Young Directors’ Competition. Around this time, the absence of otherness in contemporary Japanese society began to appear more prominently as a theme in his works. Mr Haircut (2009) was on the final list of nominations for the Kishida Drama Award that year. He participated in Festival/Tokyo for three consecutive years beginning in 2010. Black coffee (not for drinking) (2013) was in the finals and was given top ratings by the judging panel. +51 Aviación, San Borja (2015) was also in the finals and was shown at the Sydney Festival 2016. For the last few years, Kamisato has continued to write plays that are extensions of his concern about his own identity and that reflect on the problems faced by immigrants and workers, the relationship between the individual and his/her nationality, and communication with others living in the same age.
