William Forsythe
William Forsythe (° 1949) has been a pioneering figure in choreography for over 50 years. Known for transforming ballet into a dynamic 21st-century art form, he has created works spanning installations, films, and web-based projects, all rooted in his deep interest in the fundamental principles of organization of choreography. After training in Florida, Forsythe danced with the Joffrey Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet, where he became Resident Choreographer in 1976. In 1984, he began a 20-year tenure as director of Ballet Frankfurt. Following its closure in 2004, he founded The Forsythe Company, which he directed until 2015. Forsythe’s works are now performed by major ballet companies worldwide, while his “Choreographic Objects” have been shown in numerous museums and exhibitions. Forsythe holds an Honorary Doctorate from The Juilliard School and is an Honorary Fellow at the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance in London. In 2024, he received the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy.
